The Koolangka Koolangka Playground, spanning over 10,000m2 in Wellington Square, is a versatile event space. Its goal was to create an intergenerational playground, blending civil, landscaping, and building aspects, inspired by Aboriginal themes and iconic Western Australian landscapes. It features three unique playground structures, a water play area, pump track, skate park, parkour and rope play zones.
The project involved:
Collaborating with stakeholders to minimize community disruptions, including regular Construction Reference Group meetings with nearby residents.
Creating in-situ concrete retaining and turn-down walls.
Erecting a 960m2 steel cable and wire mesh catenary structure supported by 30 CHS Columns connected to CFA Piled footings.
Installing 370 natural Sandstone Blocks for rock terraces, Water Play, and Rock Formation Area.
Constructing three custom steel playground structures, including a 10m High Banksia Tower.
Laying 60m2 of honed sandstone paving.
Building a 370m2 concrete pump track.
Crafting a concrete slab skate park with Granite elements.
Constructing decorative honed Concrete Walls and Parkour Bars.
Incorporating hand-carved Granite blocks in various areas.
Installing over 200 playground rope elements.
Creating over 100m2 of permeable paving.
Setting up electrical infrastructure, including conduits, cables, light poles, and luminaires.
Installing hydraulic infrastructure, including water reticulation and sewer connections.
Implementing irrigation systems for turf and garden beds.
Adding proprietary playground elements like slides, flying fox, trampolines, swings, and spinners.
Installing ~90m of Stainless-Steel Handrails.
Preparing soil for turf and plantings.
Laying ~3,000m2 of turf.
Planting over 4,000 native shrubs and 40 trees.
Applying mulch to landscaped areas.
Employing various playground soft fall treatments.
Preserving existing mature park trees.
Providing new park furniture, including picnic tables, benches, chairs, bike racks, fountains, barbeques, and waste bins.
