C Shed Phase 3 Refurbishment

The C Shed roofing project was a complex yet essential undertaking that involved the safe removal of an asbestos roof and its replacement with a durable Colorbond roof. Beyond just a standard roof replacement, the project required careful planning and execution of temporary works to maintain the structural stability of the shed, particularly given the aged and deteriorating sheet pile wall beneath. With multiple challenges, including hazardous material removal, structural reinforcements, and unexpected delays, the project demonstrated the importance of proactive risk management and adaptive problem-solving in construction.

Key tasks included:

• Investigation of existing sheet pile wall under the shed to determine condition.
• Pre-clean of Shed to remove settled asbestos dust.
• Design of a temporary works system including.
• Bracing to roof.
• Bracing to columns.
• Support at ground level to columns along the existing sheet pile wall; and
• Support of ground adjacent to the existing sheet pile wall for construction traffic.
• Installation of the temporary works as defined above.
• Removal of asbestos sheets from roof, amenities room and heritage office.
• Clearance of C Shed from a licensed asbestos assessor.
• Structural timber repairs to existing shed roof frame.
• Reroofing of the shed with Colorbond roof sheets.
• Installation of new drainage to the roof including gutters and downpipes; and
• Air monitoring throughout the above process.

Despite the challenges faced during the C Shed roofing project, weather delays and unforeseen structural concerns, the job was successfully completed, ensuring a safer and more functional structure for years to come. Key lessons learned from this project emphasize the importance of selecting reliable subcontractors, thorough documentation, and maintaining strong client relationships.
