Advanteering was engaged by Fremantle Ports to deliver major remediation works to the heritage-listed C Shed, originally constructed in 1905. The structure had deteriorated over time due to termite damage, environmental exposure, and structural wear. With the shed forming part of a live operational wharf and a historically sensitive asset, the project involved highly coordinated structural rehabilitation, replacement of degraded materials, and compliance with strict heritage and environmental requirements. Advanteering successfully managed these complexities to deliver a structurally sound, historically respectful and operationally compatible outcome for Fremantle Ports.
The Project Included:
Removal and stabilisation of lead-containing paint throughout the shed.
Replacement of degraded timber structural elements including posts, trusses, rafters and purlins.
Installation of new screw pile foundations beneath shed post footings.
Realignment and straightening of the existing shed structure.
Installation of a new internal sheet pile wall within the shed footprint.
Replacement of the entire roof and localised wall cladding.
Removal of redundant timber and salvaging for reuse in wharf and shed repairs.
Cut and replacement of the concrete wharf deck around the shed perimeter.
Installation of new structural connections between shed posts and deck structure.
Replacement of degraded concrete slab areas within the shed.
Propping of piles and removal of timber cap blocks for half cap strengthening.
Under-wharf pile repairs using formwork, freshwater washdown and concrete pour.
Installation of steelwork for half cap strengthening over repaired piles.
Construction of a new western end wall and cargo door to heritage specifications.
Hydro-blasting and scabbling of existing concrete slab edges to prepare bonding surfaces.
Under-wharf access established using extensive scaffolding for pile and cap repairs.
Removal and reinstatement of under-wharf services to enable uninterrupted operations.
Simultaneous operations management alongside port activities and marine vessel access.
This complex structural remediation project was delivered within a live marine and heritage-sensitive environment, with zero environmental incidents and no impact to port operations. Advanteering’s multi-disciplinary team overcame a wide range of technical, heritage, and logistical challenges to extend the life of C Shed while preserving its historical character. The project was recognised with a nomination for Engineers Australia’s WA Project of the Year 2023, showcasing the high level of engineering, planning and execution that defined the success of this iconic infrastructure renewal.
